12 Tips to Creating a Professional Wardrobe on a Budget

Creating a professional wardrobe on a budget is possible if you know all the right tips and tricks. If your profession requires that you dress the part, it can get rather expensive finding clothes that are perfect for the job. However, classy, modest clothing doesn’t have to leave you in sticker shock.  Listed below are a few things that you need to know to create the look that you want on a budget.

Opt for solid colored clothing
When making purchases for your professional wardrobe, it can be beneficial choosing solid colors. Not only are solid colors more professional, they don’t draw as much attention to your wardrobe. You may be able to get away with wearing the same pants two or three times a week if you choose solid colors.

Patterns are noticeable! A few classic pieces are “must haves.”
When creating a wardrobe on a budget, a few classic pieces will help you make it through the workweek.  Black pants, a nice belt, a knee length black skirt, and comfortable high heels will be perfect for the job. Wear different tops throughout the week to make your wardrobe seem diverse.  This is a great tip if you are on a tight budget.

Multi-functional is the key!
Finding clothing that is multifunction is the key to creating a professional wardrobe on a budget.  Multifunctional clothing is something that can be worn during all seasons and that will never go out of style.

Hit the sales racks
When shopping for professional clothing for your job, the sales rack at your favorite store may just have what you need.  If you are just beginning your wardrobe, it can be tempting to pay the higher prices.  Don’t fall victim to this temptation. It will eventually go on sale. Buy a few clothing items to start you out, but wait for the sale to make the majority of your purchases.

Use your coupons
Coupons are also a great way to save money when you are shopping for a professional wardrobe.  Many stores have coupons or discount programs that you can sign up for. Are you receiving emails from stores offering you discounts?  If not, it is time to sign up!

Go to garage sales
Garage sales are also a great place to get professional clothes on a budget.  Search the local newspaper and find garage sales in prominent areas of your town. These garage sales are more likely to have the clothing items that you are searching for.

Discount stores will have what you need
If you are searching for brand names but can’t afford to pay the high prices, visit the discount store in your area.  This can add up to significant savings for you.

Focus less on clothing and more on accessories
Accessorizing the outfit is sometimes cheaper than buying brand names. Keep in mind, however, that you are a professional.  Don’t cover your body in jewelry!

Borrow from a friend
Perhaps you have a friend who no longer needs nice, professional looking clothing. Ask to borrow them.

Keep it simple
Simple clothing is more comfortable. Keep in mind that you will need to be comfortable at work.  Keeping it simple will also save you tons of money.

Find a store that you love
If you will need professional clothing, find a store that you love that offers prices that you can afford.  This will help you be able to budget for the clothing that you need for your job.

Refuse to buy unless it is on sale
When creating a professional wardrobe on a budget it is important that you refuse to buy clothing items unless it is on sale. While this will probably give you less of a selection when choosing clothes, it will save you money in the long run. Live by this rule regardless of what you are buying!

Use the tips above to look your best while you are at work. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to look professional. Borrow from a friend or buy a few classic pieces of clothing to help you look the part and to create your own professional wardrobe.
